Chiropractic for Kids If you are a parent, I am sure that you can appreciate the importance of regular check-ups for your child’s dental health, hearing and eyesight. In the same way, your child’s spine is their lifeline because the spinal chord runs through it, which contains billions of nerve fibers sending messages and energy from the brain to every part of their body. Children also need check-ups on their spine because there are many preventable conditions which can result in health impairment. The nerves along the spinal chord can be interfered with resulting in a state of “dis-ease”. The brain is your central controller and it has to communicate with the rest of your body through the nervous system. Chiropractors have known for a long time that tiny misalignments in the vertebrae cause blockages that we refer to as “subluxations”, and that they are frequently associated with a generalized weakening of the body and lowered resistance to disease. Conventional science is only in the last 10 years or so beginning to understand the nature of the signals being sent through the nervous system. While it is not yet fully understood, it is not similar to the electricity running through an electric chord. It is probably more similar to the digital information sent through computer cables. If those impulses are not transmitted properly, you get noise rather than information. This communication from the brain to the rest of the body is especially important during child development. The most exciting thing about chiropractic for kids is that their small bodies have not experienced years of bad posture and other kinds of stresses over long periods. Children respond very quickly to chiropractic care. It is also much easier to keep their little bodies healthy in the all-important growing years if they have been checked for nerve interference at an early age and had those interferences removed. Last week I was speaking with someone I met through friends. They have a special needs child that had been experiencing very little growth and improvement until recently. I asked them what they were doing differently, and they said they had started their child under chiropractic care and saw dramatic improvement. The parents were not aware I was a chiropractor, so it was truly an unbiased and unsolicited endorsement of chiropractic. For all children, each day is filled with physical activity. Running and jumping, falls and accidents are all part of a normal day – yet they can cause spinal misalignments which will later affect their health. Here are a few things you can look for that may indicate spinal issues: one hip or shoulder higher than the other, shoulder blades flared out, a foot turned in or out, one leg shorter, or a neck tilt. These are all indications that there is likely some nerve interference, and should be checked out by a chiropractor. If you have any questions, please feel free to contact me at sue@drsueleblanc.com.
