Pregnancy and Childbirth

This month I want to speak to women about pregnancy and childbirth.    Pregnant women are the most deserving group to get exercise and receive chiropractic checkups.  So many incredible changes occur in our bodies during this time.  During this very unique and special time for women, hormonal changes result in loosened joints and ligaments to prepare for childbirth.  Pregnancy requires a body that is working at its best.

While the loosened joints and ligaments are great for allowing natural delivery, they are also a time when you are more prone to injury.  You become more susceptible to sprains and strains especially if you are involved in more aggressive exercise such as running.  It is ironic that at the time you want to really take care of your body, you have a greater risk of injury.  You have weight gain and a changing center of gravity that can allow your more flexible spine to distort and bring aggravation to previously minor issues.

It is the job of the chiropractor to make sure there are healthy nerve impulses flowing through the spinal column.  Subluxations are interferences with that flow and are not always accompanied by pain.  You are doing yourself and your baby to be, a much deserved service to get preventative care by having your spine checked for subluxations.  You will ensure that your body is working at its best – this is ultimately what chiropractic care has to offer.

Swimming is a great form of exercise that is non-destructive and puts the least amount of stress on the body.  Outdoor swimming has always been my favorite method of exercise for myself and to recommend for other pregnant women.  No matter how out of shape you may be feeling, you can grab a kick board and get a great workout.  If you are fortunate enough to be pregnant during this soon upcoming outdoor swim season, grab a kickboard and enjoy.

I do not recommend indoor swimming for pregnant women.  I know there is not a long outdoor swimming season in Colorado, but I believe the indoor pool is a toxic environment.  Most pools use a chemical disinfectant such as chlorine, sometimes at much higher concentration than is in drinking water.  The disinfectants and their by-products are trapped in the indoor air and breathed in during swimming.  Your developing baby deserves a clean environment and so do you.  If you can’t find an outdoor swimming place, then my next recommendation would be walking.  It is truly amazing what a regular brisk walk can do for you.
